Bo Nau cave - Halong Bay

Bo Nau Cave (Pelican Cave) is located on the southwestern Halong Bay Vietnam. It’s about 13 kilometers far from Bai Chay Tourist Wharf and 2-3 kilometers to the southeast of Trong Mai Islet
Hang Bồ Nâu Hạ Long
Story has it that in the past, that cave had been the residence of a herd of pelicans (in Vietnamese: “bo nong”).
The number of pelicans is so many that they filled the cave.
Therefore, the cave was named after thepelican as Bo Nau Cave (“bo nau” and “bo nong” are pronounced similarly in Vietnamese).
The mouth of Bo Nau Cave is quite wide with the size of 5-7 meters. It’s in the shape of arch and has many stalactites falling down from the ceiling.
Hang Bồ Nâu Hạ Long
Right on the entrance is three blocks of stone. They look like a sculpture about three fairies playing chess.
The space inside covers an area of 200 square meters. The foundation of Bo Nau Cave is flat with various stalagmites growing up in different sizes and shapes.
Hang Bồ Nâu Hạ Long
From the cave, tourists will get a unique view of Halong bay that seems like standing in the monster’s mouth with sharp teeth and seeing magnificent scenery outside.

Dau Go Cave – Halong Bay

Dau Go Cave is on Driftwood Island. Seen from afar, the entrance to the grotto appears to be blue, and has a shape similar to that of a jellyfish.
After 90 steps up the island, the entrance is reached. The ceiling of the grotto is about 25 m high. Hundreds of stalactites falling down from the roof of the grotto look like a waterfall.
Hang Đầu Gỗ Hạ Long
The exterior is a room with a vault full of natural light. Many forms may be seen in the rock formations of the chamber, depending on the imagination of the visitor of course.
Crossing the first chamber, one enters the second chamber through a narrow passage.
Hang Đầu Gỗ Hạ Long
The light here is mysterious, and new images appear in the stone. It leaves us wondering what these might be imagined as.
The third chamber of the grotto is widely opened. At the end of the grotto is a well of clear water.
Looking up in the dim light we recognize that surrounding us is the image of an ancient citadel and a scuffle of elephants, horses & men with bristly swords and spears.
Hang Đầu Gỗ Hạ Long
All are making a rush and seem to have been petrified suddenly.
The name Driftwood Grotto came from a popular story of the resistance war against the Yuan – Mongolian aggressors. In a decisive battle, Tran Hung Ðao was given the order to prepare many ironwood stakes here, to be planted on the riverbed of Bach Dang River.
Hang Đầu Gỗ Hạ Long
The remaining wooden pieces found in the grotto have given it its present name.
The name Giau Go is associated with the legend that General Tran Hung Ðao (1226-1300) hid ironwood stakes in preparation for the Bach Dang battle against the Yuan-Mongolian invaders.
If the Thien Cung Grotto is monumental and modern (in its natural form), then Driftwood Grotto is solemn, but also grandiose. In “Marvels of the World,” published in France in 1938, the author called the grotto “Grotte des merveilles” (a site of many marvels).
Hang Đầu Gỗ Hạ Long
In the first chamber, in the very middle of the grotto, is a colossal pillar supporting the large vault.
On the top of the pillar, there appears to be a monk draped in a long, dark cloak, with his right hand clasping a cane.
The second chamber is narrow. Here, the stalactites look smaller but more graceful.
One feels like going to a pagoda with a monk in meditation so that one steps more gently.
Hang Đầu Gỗ Hạ Long
The third chamber features high stone columns out of which nature has carved images of a large kingdom of heroes and soldiers holding swords and spears rushing up, of war elephants and horses or lions, etc.
All of them suddenly were petrified and remained there for good.
In 1917, Emperor Khai Dinh came to visit the grotto, and amazed by the beauty of the place, ordered the erection of an engraved stone stele singing the praises of Halong Bay and the grotto.
Today, it remains to the right-hand side of the entrance. You should visit Dau Go Cave once!

Kim Quy cave Halong

Kim Quy Cave or Golden Tortoise cave is situated on Dam Nam Islet, with a peak 187 m above sea level.
Come to Kim Quy cave, visiter can amagine a tortoise with a peak 187 m above sea level.
Dâm Bac Islet is in the front of the grotto and Soi Sim Islet in the back.
Kim Quy Cave is 100 m long and 5 to 10 m wide, running in a north-south direction.
A narrow way leads to the interior of the grotto where a stream flows.
The stalactites here are snow-white and lightly hang from the ceiling.
It is linked to the ancient legend of the Golden Tortoise: after having helped Emperor Lê Loi defeat his enemies, the Golden Tortoise took back the magic sword he had given him, and swam towards the sea.
Arriving in Ha Long Bay, it met with so many evil spirits and demons hindering its journey that it remained to do battle.
After having defeated them all, the Golden Tortoise was so exhausted that it searched for a grotto to rest in, and once inside, turned to stone.
Today in Kim Quy Cave, it can be found dozing, still with ancient wounds covering its body.

Luon cave Halong

Luon Cave is situated on Bo Hon Island, 14 km south of Bai Chay Beach.
In front of the grotto is Con Rua Islet, and the Sky Gate is on the right. Here the cliffs stretch vertically out of the pure blue and smooth water.
Hang Luồn Hạ Long
At the water-level, an arched entrance leads to the grotto, just at the base of the island.
Passing through the pretty entrance, you come across a tranquil round lake, surrounded by luxuriant trees and high dangerous stone walls.
Hang Luồn Hạ Long
Monkeys run to and fro in groups, benjamin fig trees shade the landscape and many orchids hang their sweet-scented flowers. In the lake, many species abound: shrimp, fish, crab and cuttle-fish.
Hang Luồn Hạ Long
This is an enclosed group of islands. It connects with the sea via a 4-meter-wide, 100-meter-long, and 3-meter-high mouth. Inside the grotto, the 1-km2 brackish lake is surrounded by mountains.
Hang Luồn Hạ Long
On the cliff one still find traces of fossils of fresh-water snails, which prove that men used to live there and this must have been a deep valley then.
Hang Luồn Hạ Long
The beauty of the site, is the mingling of a number of factors: the mountain’s size and form, the colour of the water and the clouds. You should visit Luon Cave once!

Me Cung cave Halong

Me Cung cave is in two kilometers south-west of Ti Top Beach. It formed on Lom Bò Island, and seen from afar, the entrance is like the roof of a house denting the island’s side.
After a narrow crack only allowing one person through at a time, many partitions appear.
Động Mê Cung Hạ Long
These chambers are somewhat small and narrow, but very refined, and with many stalagmites and stalactites bearing beautiful forms.
Threading your way through narrow passages, you find a dim light from afar, which signals the exit of the grotto.
Động Mê Cung Hạ Long
On getting out of the grotto, climb up several rugged stone stairs and look down, you see a large round lake surrounded by the mountain.
Its waters is blue all year round. The lake is home to many kinds of fish, shrimps, octopuses, algae, see weed, and coral.
Động Mê Cung Hạ Long
Lying adjacent to the lake there is an area of old trees popularly known as an alluring “royal garden”.
It is dry and well-ventilated, and features a thick layer of shells forming the foundation of the entrance.
Formerly, this layer was 1.2-meter-thick and semi-fossilized. In the course of research, there was also a fossilized animal’s skeleton discovered in the interior.
Me Cung cave has been recognized by archaeologists as one of the vestiges of the pre-Ha Long new Stone Age culture, that existed between 7,000 and 10,000 years ago.
Động Mê Cung Hạ Long
Pushing into the grotto, tourists feel like walking in a palace of a Persian king.
Hearing the murmur from out of nowhere, you think that Scheherazade is telling the stories of the Thousand and One Nights for her king.
On the island, there are many ancient trees casting long reflections on the water

Trinh Nu Cave, Halong

Trinh Nu Cave or Virgin Cave is situated on the island range of Bô Hon in the system comprising the Sung Sôt Grotto, Dong Tiên Lake and Luon Grotto.
It is 15 km south of Bai Cháy Beach. For fishermen, the Virgin Grotto is their house, but for young lovers, it is considered as the symbol of truly love, and is the romantic place for taking oath of love.
Entering Trinh Nu Grotto, one finds in the middle of the grotto a stone statue of a lying-girl with her long hair hanging down who is looking to the sea in a vain hope.
Situated opposite to Trinh Nu Grotto, Trong (or Male) Grotto has a stone statue of a boy who turns his face to Trinh Nu Grotto.
One still hears his vain scream in tune with the wind blowing into the cliff somewhere.
Legend has it, there once was a beautiful fisherman’s daughter, whose family was so poor that it was in the service of the rich administrator of the fishing zone.
He forced the family to give him the girl as a concubine. She already had a lover who at that time was on the high seas catching fish to prepare for their wedding.
The administrator, angered by her refusal, exiled her to a wild island where she suffered from hunger and exhaustion.
On one frightening night, amidst terrible rain and winds, she turned to stone.
It was also the night that her lover knew of her danger, and he rowed his boat in search of her.
On the terrible night, the tempest destroyed his boat and he floated to one of the islands.
In a lighting flash he saw his mate in the distance, but his calls were driven away by the wind.
He used a stone block to hammer down on the mountain cliffs to announce to her he was nearby.
He struck until blood flowed from his hands, and in his final exhaustion, turned to stone (today’s Trong Grotto).
Tourists also find Trinh Nu Grotto attractive partly because of its association with a fanciful love legend: “Once upon a time, there lived a boy and a girl who deeply loved each other.
However, they were so poor that they could not be able to get married.
The boy decided to go offshore fishing with a hope that he could get enough money for his marriage.
And the girl painfully waited in vain for her fiancé. She finally took a small boat and rowed to the sea to look for him.
So immense is the sea, and so many are the islands, the boy, therefore could not hear her doleful call, though he was just several canals away.
Exhausted, the girl lied in a grotto, looking to the sea and got petrified after the last call.
The boy got lost in a grotto nearby, shouting to call the girl in vain.
The echo of their call through the cliff was so moving. At last, the boy became exhausted and petrified in the grotto – present-day Trông Grotto.”
Today, whenever passing this place, tourists can still hear his faint call.

Thien cung Grotto Halong

It is situated on the south-west side the bay, 4 km from the wharf outside of Ha Long City.
The way to Thiên Cung is a perilous one, covered on both sides by thick forest. After entering a narrow gate, the grotto’s 130-meter-long girth opens up.
Động Thiên Cung
Getting in we are more astonished in front of the very animated and splendid beauty which is made from stalactite.
On the east wall of the grotto, there is a grandiose and imposing picture with characters of tales.
Going out of the Thiên Cung Grotto, we have a sensation of just watching a unique, meticulous, interesting fine-art museum which is made by nature, get out of the imagine, ability and intellect of man.
Động Thiên Cung
This grotto is recently discovered, one of the most beautiful grottoes in Ha Long Bay.
Legend has it, that beautiful young lady named Mây (cloud), caught the eye of the Dragon Prince and he fell in love with her.
Động Thiên Cung
They were betrothed, and their wedding lasted seven days and seven nights in the very centre of the grotto.
In honour of the wedding, small dragons flew about through the stalactites and stalagmites, elephants danced together happily, snakes twined themselves around trees and two stone lions danced with their manes flowing in the wind.
A large elephant, smartly dressed, waited for the bride and the groom.
The genies of the south and north stars also came to attend the banquet, and the atmosphere was definitely animated and lively.
Động Thiên Cung
All these scenes have been seemingly fossilized in the grotto.
In the centre are four large pillars supporting the “roof of heaven.”
From the base to the top, many strange images seem to live in the stone: birds, fish, flowers and even scenes of human life.
On the north wall of the grotto a group of fairies seem to dance and sing in honour of the wedding.
Under the immeasurably high roof, stalactites make a natural stone curtain.
Somewhere there is the sound of a drum beating, but it is actually just the noise made by the wind blowing through stone.
Arriving at the last partition of the grotto, a natural gushing stream of water babbles throughout the year.
Here are three small ponds of clear water. Legend has it, that this was where Mây bathed her 100 children, bringing them up wisely and happily into adolescence.
One path meanders out of the grotto; it was the way Mây, together with 50 of her children, took to harvest new lands.
The 50 remaining children, together with their father, were left to build the native land. Left behind by the mother was the natural stream described above.

Ba Ham Lake Halong Bay

Situated on the south-west side of Hạ Long Bay Vietnam, Ba Hầm Lake is found on Ðầu Bê Island (Calf Head Island) in Lan Hạ Bay.
This island is part of the range of islands at the farthest end of Hạ Long Bay, bordering the immense zone Long Châu Sea.
Ba Hầm Lake is situated in the middle of a narrow, rectangular area, with the all four sides enclosed by vertical cliffs.

Hồ Ba Hầm Hạ Long
The lake is a system comprising three wide and round pits, linked together by a narrow and meandering tunnel.
Stalactites hang from the ceiling in a myriad of strange, coloured forms. The silence is disturbed only by the sounds of the boat’s oars.

On the island are many species of plants such as orchids, benjamin figs, banyans and cycads, which blossom throughout the year.
It is also the home of yellow-haired monkeys, birds, flying squirrels and bats.
Under the deep blue surface of the water are the animated lives of shrimp and fish.
Although 25 km from the shore, it has long been considered an ideal tourism zone.

The entrance is a open semi-circular hole in the flat stone wall on the north-west side of the island, 4 to 5 m above the sea.
Starting from the entrance, tourists enter the first tunnel, which boasts a forest of stalactites and stalagmites in different shapes and various colours.
They fall down the water surface like the roots of banyan or ficus trees.
The deeper one pushes into the tunnel, the darker it becomes.

Hồ Ba Hầm Hạ Long
The river is deep yet so clear that one can see shoals of fish swimming.
Some 100 m from the entrance one finds a shaft of light coming from the roof of the tunnel, which reveals different kinds of orchids clinging to the cliff, cycads growing here and there, trúc duôi gà (a kind of reed with cock’s tail-liked yellow leaves) flourishing in clumps.

Hồ Ba Hầm Hạ Long
In the southeast cliff of the second tunnel there grows an old carambola tree, which bears fruits all year round.
Tourists can find groups of monkeys, flying squirrels, or silver-headed parrots gathering in its branches.
Lying one cliff away from the second one, the third tunnel is home to various species of bats and butterflies.
Amidst the tranquil atmosphere, you feel like boating in an abyssal well walled by mountains.
Ba Hầm Lake is one of the beauty spots of Ha Long Bay.

Halong Bay, Vietnam

Halong Bay is one of Mother Earth’s most amazing natural wonders and one of Vietnam’s most prized treasures.
A comfortable 3 hours drive from Hanoi, Halong Bay is in Northeastern Vietnam on the shores of the Gulf of Tonkin.

Explore Halong Bay Vietnam

The bay is dominated by more than 1,600 limestone karsts and islets which rise out of the waters of the bay to heights of up to 100 meters (330 feet) and the numerous caves and grottos spread throughout the bay.
Abundant scenic beauty, archeological and geological significance, cultural and historical connections, fresh seafood and proximity to international gateways make Halong Bay one of Vietnam’s most popular places to visit.
Such is the significance of Halong Bay Vietnam that in 1994, UNESCO recognized the heart of Halong Bay as being a site of natural World Heritage and stated that "Apart from Halong Bay there are no equivalent sites on the World Heritage List..."

Geographical Location/Distribution

Halong Bay is located on the Western side of the Gulf of Tonkin in Northeastern Vietnam.
The bay is approximately 35 km (21 miles) northeast of the port city of Hai Phong and approximately 170 km (105 miles) by road from the capital Hanoi.
The town of Halong is situated on the coast to the North of the bay. The journey from Hanoi to Halong takes approximately 3.5 hours.
Halong Bay is formed by Cat Ba island to the South, Ngoc Hung and Van Canh islands to the East and the Vietnamese coastline to the North and West.
The bay covers a total area of 1,553 square kilometers (600 square miles). Occupying the heart of the bay between Halong City and Cat Ba island, the central World Heritage area stretches for 434 square kilometers (167 square miles).

Natural Features

Islands and Karsts

The most outstanding feature of Halong Bay and undoubtedly its greatest attraction are the 1,696 islands, islets and rocky karst outcrops.
989 of these islets and rocky outcrops have been been given imaginative names by the locals over the years.
These have been derived from their perceived shapes and include names such as Man’s Head, Fighting Cocks, Wading Ox and Wallowing Buffalo.
With heights ranging from 50-100 meters (160-330 feet) and a height-to-width ratio of about 6:1, the majority of these karst pinnacles and islets have sheer, vertical cliffs.
They are uninhabited and unaffected by human activities. The pure size and numbers of these outcrops provide a stunning contrast and backdrop to the turquoise waters of the bay when viewed from sea level.

Caves and Grottos

Another exceptional geological feature of Halong Bay is the number of limestone islands which have caves and grottoes within them.
The total number of caves has never been determined and there are almost certainly more which are yet to be discovered.
In order to preserve the natural state and integrity of the large number of caves and grottos in the World Heritage Area, only some are open to visitors.
The most commonly visited are Thien Cung (Heavenly Palace) cave, Dau Go (Wood Tip) grotto, Sung Sot (Surprise) cave and Trinh Nu (Virgin) grotto.
The shapes and formations on the sides and rooves of the caves, many now being part of local folklore and legends, bear witness to the different stages of formation over the ages.
Some cave features, such as calcified shell-beds, are the direct result of ancient human activity.

Sea and Lakes

The lower chambers of some caves and grottos are below sea level. Due to the porous nature of limestone, these chambers are often partially filled to form tidal lakes and pools.
Although most of these are shallow, the depths of some have never been determined.
The geomorphology of Halong Bay indicates that it is almost certain that there are undiscovered and fully entombed lakes within many of the islands.
Dau Be (Goat’s Head island) alone has 6 different tidal lakes.
The sea in Halong Bay is generally less than 10 meters (33 feet) deep and boasts a rich biodiversity of about 1,000 species of marine animals.
Over 160 species of coral have been identified. Coral reefs make up 30% of the seabed and in some areas as much as 80% of the seabed is covered in coral reefs. Most coral reefs are at a depth of 4-6 meters.

Flora/Fauna

The majority smaller islets and karsts are capped with a low shrubby ’crown’ The larger islands are home to dense tropical forests featuring abundant bird life.
The island of Cat Ba on the Southern flank of Halong Bay is a rich treasure trove for nature lovers.
The National Park which occupies much of the island, and some of the surrounding waters, range in diversity from double-tiered primeval tropical rainforest on the slopes of the hills, down to tidal mangrove forests and inshore coral reefs.
The island is home to several plant and tree species highly prized for their medicinal properties, and one of the rarest primate species on earth, the Cat Ba (Golden-headed) Langur.
There may be as few as 50 of these animals between here and extinction.

Culture/History

Human History

Archeological evidence suggests humans may have inhabited the area in and around Halong Bay for as long as 18,000 years.
Some of these are distinctly different enough to have been given their own names, such as the Soi Nhu from the Mesolithic age and the Halong culture from the Neolithic age.
Van Don in the Southeast of the bay was once one of the most important trading ports in Vietnamese ancient history.

Folklore

There is perhaps a greater number of myths, legends and folklore surrounding Halong Bay than any other area in Vietnam.
The current name of the bay (Descending Dragon) is itself a mystery. Some say it can be attributed to the French in the late 1890’s, others say it comes from a famous Vietnamese folk tale.
Myths and folklore surround many of the caves and grottos. Tales of life’s love lost; of forbidden love forever together cast in stone; wedding celebrations of truly celestial splendor; of poverty and power, and more.
Other legends have at least some bases in fact. Some of the famous exploits of Vietnamese warriors from history, such as national heroes Ngo Quyen and Tran Hung Dao have become legends involving Ha Long Bay and the surrounding areas.
Ngo Quyen is most famous for finally defeating the Chinese after 1,000 years of occupation. Tran Hung Dao is remembered for bringing those same guerilla tactics back to life 300 years later.
The following tale is recounted to serve as an illustration of the connections Halong Bay has to Vietnamese history and why the bay is so deeply entrenched in the Vietnamese national psyche.

Tran Hung Dao and his Battle of the Bach Dang River

After being driven out of Vietnam by Ngo Quyen in 938, the Chinese repeatedly attempted to regain their former serfdom for several hundred years more.
In 1288 another Han fleet appeared off the coast to make invasion preparations.
The Vietnamese fleet under the command of Generals Tran Hung Dao and Tran Khanh Du was vastly outsized, outnumbered and outgunned ... but not overawed. They made their own preparations.
Using Ngo Quyen’s example from 300 years earlier, Tran Hung Dao ordered that wooden stakes be cut and sharpened.
It is said some of these were moved into a forward staging area in a cave on an island in Halong Bay .
We know this cave today as Hang Dau Go (Wooden Stake Cave) on the island with the same name.
Under cover of darkness the Vietnamese drove the stakes into the bed of the upper reaches of the Bach Dang river mouth (near present day Hai Phong) until the tips of the stakes were hidden just below the surface of the water at low tide.
The shallow draft Vietnamese ships continued to move about, positioning themselves for battle, feinting attacks and creating diversions.
When preparations were complete, Tran Hung Dao waited for favorable wind and tide conditions. Late in the year 1288, the conditions were right.
The Vietnamese forces assembled in battle formation and set out to engage the Han fleet.
After ensuring the Chinese fleet was fully engaged, the Vietnamese ships turned against the ebbing tide and fled back into the Bach Dang river.
The Chinese followed in hot pursuit, growing ever more certain of victory.
As the tide reached its full ebb, the deeper draught Chinese ships became impaled on the stakes.
The smaller, nimbler Vietnamese fleet then picked off each impaled ship one-by-one, like lions might harass and harangue a much larger wounded elephant ... until the final demise.

Attractions and Activities

Undoubtedly Halong Bay’s greatest attraction is its natural scenery. The towering limestone outcrops jutting skywards from the emerald-blue waters.
The sheer numbers and size of the islands, islets and karsts within the bay serve to humble even the most jaded traveler.
Swimming, kayaking, hiking and of course photography are favorite pastimes for visitors to Halong Bay - one of the most popular tourist attractions in all of Vietnam. Abundant fresh local seafood is another delight.

Floating fishing villages are the most popular human attraction. Entire village populations live, work and die on these ’floating islands’ in Halong Bay.
The villagers are mainly fisherfolk and ply the waters around their villages selling their fresh produce to the passing tourist trade.

Located off the coast of Hai Phong City, its beaches (named Cat Co 1 and Cat Co 2) are great for sunbathing and swimming during the summer months.
If you’re not a fan of crowds on the beach, you can charter a speedboat or rent a kayak to Monkey Island and Lan Ha Bay, where the beaches are cleaner and quieter.

Best Time to Go

The best time to go to Cat Ba Island is during the summer, between April and November. It’s also peak tourist season in Halong Bay, with numerous boat tours stopping on the island.
The beaches can be very crowded with fellow tourists so we recommend heading there early to find a good spot.
Make sure to book well in advance as hotels are also pricier this time of the year.
For better deals, visit from September to November as crowds are significantly smaller as the climate on Cat Ba transitions into monsoon season.
